Over the past few decades, the Internet has grown exponentially. The amount of advancements and improvements has driven the Internet to become, arguably, the greatest invention of the 20th century. The Internet was first theorized to be a network of networks, however, in the recent years it has evolved into an enormous knowledge bank for pretty much anything. Through the use of the Internet, it seems that anything could become possible. Although, with that kind of immense power, I feel as though there ought to be more regulations on the Internet. As it stands, through regular use of the Internet, many corporations are collecting information about you. All the websites you visit, the videos you watch, and even the questions that you ask search engines, are all being recorded and analysed.
But what is this all for? What are the possible gains that these corporations have and why are they beneficial in the long run? One of the many possible gains that comes from analyzing this information is advertising. The more an advertisement relates to your current needs and what you are looking for, the more likely it is that you will purchase that product. If a corporation can properly place ads to customers who have a higher chance to buy the product based on that advertisement, then they will inevitably reduce the amount of money that is wasted on advertisements that do not capture customers who do not want to buy that product.
Every click and every search that is done on the Internet is being recorded and used to gain an upper hand in the business world. Some people may think that this practice is reasonably justifiable, however, there are some people who do not wish their actions to be recorded on the Internet. Whatever the reason may be, the freedom of searching into ones personal lives through the tracking their use of the Internet seems to go against our rights to privacy. That is precisely the reason that I feel that there ought to be more regulations on the Internet.
