In Chapter 3 of Surfing the Tsunami, author Todd Kelsey provides data regarding AI's improvements and the possible future of the job marketplace. He linked an article titled, Will Robots Take Our Children's Jobs?. After reading through this article, I found it to be very interesting for the following reasons.
First and foremost, the author of the article, Alex Williams, describes a multitude of professions that AI could take over in the near future. Some of these professions are what I had previously expected to be the case, however, a certain section of professions listed surprised me. The health industry has long been, at least in my mind, relatively safe from the expansion of AI. I thought this because I always assumed that people would want to be treated by other people. There is no empathy within AI's current capabilities. Perhaps that could be the major deterrent for AI expanding into the medical field, however, as Williams describes, the efficiency at which AI can operate at far exceeds that of what humans are capable of. I can now see a world where AI expands into the heath industry and does not incredibly well.
That in and of itself is a scary thought. Having one's health in the hands of an unempathetic robot who does not understand the miracle of life. Using AI's tools, statistical analysis of a patient could spell a 51% mortality rate, in which case, AI has the possibility of denying treatment because the odds of failure are greater than success. In this specific scenario, one's only hope would be that there is some regulations placed on AI and that their decisions are not final, but only a recommendation to a human doctor. One who could sympathize with the patient.
I asked ChatGPT what it thinks will happen if AI were to be used in the health industry. Read my next blog post to find out what it thinks!
